New Telugu movie Baahubali angers Jains in Karnataka

New Telugu movie Baahubali angers Jains in Karnataka

Telugu film maker S.S. Rajamouli's magnum opus Baahubali has drawn the ire of Jains in Karnataka for hurting their religious sentiments. Featuring top South cine stars Rana Daggubati, Sudeep, Anushka Shetty and Prabhas, the title of the movie is derived from revered Jain saint Bahubali -a proponent of peace.

The period movie, which reportedly has a whopping budget of Rs.70 crore, will be released in 2015 in two installments. Recently, a video of the making of the movie was released that depicted the protagonist - Prabhas - wielding a sword in a war sequence. The pictures of Bahubali have also been used in the video. Last week, Jain institution Sode Matha issued a legal notice to Rajamouli for hurting the religious sentiments of Jains.

Bahubali's statue is located at five different pilgrimage centres across Karnataka, including the world famous site of Shravanabelagola, 150 kms northwest of Bangalore. Bahubali, also known as Gommateshwara, is one of the most revered Jain saints. The Ganga dynasty kings erected the statue of Gommateshwara atop a hill in Shravanabelagola during the 9th century. Since then, every 12 years, the Mahamastaka Abhisheka (anointment) of the statue takes place.

According to the mutt's legal consultant M.C. Nagashree, the movie hurt the religious sentiments of peace loving Jains as the title has been used for a violence-based movie. Also, the picture of Bahubali has been extensively used in the video. The mutt, in its notice, said the pictures of Bahubali were to be used only after it gave the permission. It also sought change in the title of the movie.

The Jain community intends to approach the Karnataka government to settle the matter in case Rajamouli does not change the movie's title. Rajamouli has not reacted so far to the notice in front of the media, as he hopes to tackle it legally.

Hailing from Karnataka, Rajamouli became one of the most successful filmmakers in south India by directing blockbuster Telugu movies. Initially, the film maker had planned to shoot Baahubali in Karnataka, but the movie is now being shot in Andhra Pradesh.
